Review: Finding Us by Tracie Peterson

One candid photograph will change the lives of four people forever.

While taking photographs at an exposition in Seattle in 1909, Camera Girl Eleanor Bennett snaps an image of a woman in widow's clothes with deep sorrow etched in her expression and a young infant in her arms.

Eleanor longs to study botany at the University of Washington and soon becomes fast friends with botanist Bill Reed, but she can't stop thinking about the widow in the photograph. She is stunned to learn Bill recognizes the woman as the sister-in-law he believed lost in a shipwreck.

As Eleanor and Bill hunt for Amelia Reed to reunite her with her grief-stricken husband, they must stand together to face the danger that follows and learn to trust that God will direct their paths.   

 Alright guys, you know I love me some Tracie Peterson books. I devour all her work, and lots of it gets rereads because it's just so good. Finding Us was a good book. I did thoroughly enjoy the characters. The setting was nice. (I realllllllly wanted to be able to go to Alaska with them though. I love her Alaska books the best.) The concept was cool, considering I had never heard of the event that the book is centered around, and old time photography is always fun to read about. I will say that the pacing on this book was hard for me. I felt like everything was moving so fast, and at times it felt forced. I mean, the main characters are basically ready for marriage by chapter three. Also, the situation with the sister-in-law was extremely reminiscent of an incident that occurred with Miranda during the Yukon Quest series. It was a quick read, and an enjoyable one. Maybe not one I would put on my consistent reread list, but there were parts that I would really like to read back over and savor. Overall, yes I recommend it, but I would recommend others of her work more.

Review: Ever Constant by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

She's always determined to be the stable, reliable one. But now her commitment may destroy her.

On the surface, Whitney Powell is happy working with her sled dogs and welcoming the new additions to her family through her sisters' marriages and an upcoming birth. But her life is full of complications, including an estranged father, that have her on the edge of losing control. Growing up, she was the strong sister, and she can't give that up now.

When villagers in outlying areas come down with a horrible sickness, Dr. Peter Cameron turns to Whitney and her dogs for help navigating the deep snow, and they become close while ministering to the sick together. Peter has long recognized her finer qualities but is troubled by the emotions and secrets she keeps buried within. He wants to help but wonders if she is more of a risk than his heart can take.

As sickness spreads throughout Nome and another man courts Whitney, she and Peter will discover that sometimes it is only in weakness that you can find strength.

 It has been too long since I've been able to review a duo by these two, and too long since I've read an Alaska book. Ever Constant was the absolute BEST ending to this trilogy. The story was so poignant. Whitney, with her determination to be strong, always, and Peter, with his desire to compartmentalize all the emotions, really resonated with me. The emotions are high with this one, and especially if you've read books one and two (which is a definite must) then you'll be so attached to the characters that you've just got to go along for the ride. Seriously... this is probably the only book I have ever read that made me cry in chapter one. What's with that? (We talked about making Erica cry, Kim!) I loved seeing the changing relationship between Whitney and her dad. I loved Peter's patience and love. But mostly, I loved the reminders that God is the only one who is Ever Constant in this life, a message I too often forget. I was nowhere near ready to let this family go, but I'm thinking that since Chris has three younger children, and he still needs to resolve some issues with Matthew, that we've got the makings of another trilogy there... Just saying. Absolutely five out of five stars.

Review: Alaska Twilight by Colleen Coble

I'll admit that I should have written this months ago, when it was all still fresh in my mind, but I'll do my very best.

First of all, this is my first time to read something by Colleen Coble and I'm definitely a fan now. You guys know that I can't resist a story set in Alaska! It's one of my Achilles' heels in reading. {The other is adoption of any kind, including by marriage} Colleen did such a good job of capturing the beauty of Alaska with her words, that the fire inside me that longs to go there is burning brighter than ever. The characters were wonderful. Not only was there growth, but there was just a meshing of the perfect cast. Even the bad guys, one of whom I did not actually see coming until it was almost too late, were exactly what the story needed. I, of course, spent a good amount of time being angry at the dumb ol' sister-in-law. She was certifiable, the looney witch! {Don't worry, just a turn of phrase. No witches in the book.} The relationships that each of the MCs had with Brooke would melt any heart of stone. And seeing Haley work through her new relationship with a sister she didn't even know she had was both painful and beautiful. The grandmother was basically the only voice of TRUE reason in the whole book, since everyone else was caught up in all the what-not going on, and I loved her. Especially, her love for Haley. And those two even worked out some of their own junk to. Basically a 5 star book of love and healing that has an edge of suspense that keeps you flipping pages like nobody's business ;)

Review: Under The Midnight Sun by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

5 Stars for this masterpiece. I can't believe that the end of this series has already come! The Heart of Alaska will always hold a very special place in my heart. Book 1 introduced me to Kim as an author. Book 2 *literally* introduced me to Tracie and Kim. In person. I almost died of happiness! And here we are at the end. With a story that thrilled me and kept me glued to the pages, straight through! Of course, the cover hooked me first. Each cover is more beautiful than the last. I loved the heroine in this book, Tayler, who happened to be an atypical character for the time period. A woman naturalist. Highly acclaimed at national parks. Totally cool. And of course, it was about time that we got to hear Thomas's story. I figure that fans have loved him from afar(ish) long enough to deserve this special treat. Of course, it's always exciting to see old friends like Cassidy and the other members of staff here. I think you'll be delighted to see how our other friends conclude their stories as well, for they have expertly been given their say in this story that's "just for Thomas and Tayler" (but really it's not!) Of course, how can I go any longer without a nod to Denali, a favorite destination of mine, if only in books so far. (I was shocked to even read the word McKinley in here! But I suppose it was a necessary evil ;) ) Speaking of evil, let's stop a moment and talk about our bad guy, who was giving me real Martin Paxton vibes for a while. (He comes to a better end than that though, I guess...) And the semi-bad-guy of Tayler's mother, who really needed to get her act together. A character you'll love to hate (for a while). Well done. I can't say much more about it, (I'm surprised I made it this far without spoilers!) except that I truly did love it, and I hope you will too! And tell me what you think, after you've read it! I can't wait to hear from you.

P.S. Don't worry. I know chapter 2 doesn't start until page 47, but the chapters aren't all that long!

Review: Alaskan Reunion by Belle Calhoune

Here is one that I wrote back in July.... I have two new reviews that I am ready to write, but until then, here is this one!

Paige was thrown out of her Alaskan village two years ago, after her father embezzled from the town. She was deemed guilty by association, and her boyfriend told her in no uncertain terms that she needed to leave. Now she's back, and with a few surprises, including a check for part of the money her father took and Emma, her baby, who needs to be introduced to her daddy. Can she and Cameron put the past behind them to make a real family for Emma?


I'm giving this book 4.5 stars.

1: Let's start with the obvious. Alaska!!! My absolute favorite setting for books. The village is called Love, Alaska.... is there anything more perfect than that? No... the answer is no. (I mean, I have a label just for Alaska books, because eventually they will take over this blog ;) )

2: My goodness... those first couple of chapters I was very offended by the townspeople. How dare they treat Paige like that? It's a great story if it can get you up in arms that quickly.

3: This story had great highlights of trust and forgiveness throughout it, and in a really realistic way too.

4: This was the first Belle Calhoun book I've ever read, and I'm a fan. I enjoy her style and her characters.

5: All-around a prize winner. Great story, great cover, great everything. There wasn't anything about this book that I didn't like. (Well, besides the fact that I was very confused about Emma. Her birthday is December 5th, the story is late April... they keep saying 14 months, but shouldn't she be 16, almost 17, months old? Maybe my math is really bad, but last time I checked....It doesn't change the substance of the story, though.)

Review: Out of the Ashes by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

Okay, as you might have picked up by now.... when I have too many feelings for a book, I find it necessary to use an official blurb from the back of the book.

(Apologies in advance for my excitement for this book, which will come through in a rainbow of text colors. It's exuberant, but I'm excited and it's my blog anywho!)

Shall I start with the obvious, and by that I mean, 5 stars for a book that I only put down because I wanted to keep my job and not fail my classes! Alright, let's get started. Ummm.... hello!?!?! ALASKA!!!! This is my happy place in books. It's wonderful! I want to go so badly! And this book just made that desire all the stronger. I want to see Denali!! And the caribou and the northern lights and the trains! And then the characters! I got to revisit my favorites from the last book (Incidentally, the book that introduced me to Kim Woodhouse!) and got to see where they were going. I found out that where they were going was exactly what my heart had hoped for. Honestly, this book is goals BrilLiaNt!!! New characters were introduced, and I loved them too. Reading good books is like making friends all over the world! Can I just say that Mrs. Johnson is one of my favorite people in this series!!?!! I'm a sucker for the hard-to-crack-really-actually-teddy-bear people! And of course Mrs. Harrison was hilarious! Cassidy..... my heart! (No, I can't tell you! I need you to read this for yourself!) Of course, the spiritual side to this book was uplifting and real, as always! You could see God working across the pages! Now THAT'S a good book! When scary things happen at the end, well.... if I hadn't been at work with like 50 kids in close proximity, I'm 99.9998% certain that I would have dissolved into a heaping mess of tears and love for literary characters. In fact, when I had the last 5 pages to read, my roommate stepped out of the room. I told her, "Allie, if you come back and I'm sobbing my heart out, just don't touch. I need to have my real tears for my literary characters on my own." Thankfully for the both of us, I was fine. Long story short, if you don't read this you'll probably regret it for ages and ages! But that's okay. I'm not telling you how to live your life. (Lies! I totally am!) Anyway, I'm sure you want to see the beautiful cover.

P.S. I'm sure you're wondering what happened when I GOT TO MEET MY TWO FAVORITE AUTHORS! And I'll tell you, as soon as I have a good long time to sit down and think through my words so that I don't discombobulate anyone, because I was so happy that I can't speak about it coherently. (Pardon me while I roll my eyes at myself, and also as I realize that "was" is the wrong tense for that sentence....)

4 Stars for this book!

1: If you've been here before, you're probably wondering if I made up the title of this book. No, I didn't, but yes, that title did force me to sign up. I tried not to, I was afraid I was signing up for too many, but I couldn't resist this one. Alaska for the win, am I right? (Yes, I'm right.)

2: You know I have a major weakness for kids in books, but twins........ almost as irresistible as Alaska. If you love to have kids in the books you read... well, keep reading, cause I will link the amazon page for this book near the end of the post.

3: Sweet. Romance. How much cuter could they be? Not any, in my opinion. Seriously, I think I'm adding them to my power-couple list. Also, I'm probably going to have to go back and read the other books in this series. Actually, I need a word a little bit stronger than probably. 

4: Jemma and Bree, and the parents.... the matchmakers... they were hilarious, and so sweet. Also, I did find the sarcasm. Sarcasm appeals to me, because I'm sometimes annoyingly sarcastic.

5: Be forewarned: You will crave pie when you are finished with this (AWESOME) book!

Open Doors
When a character opens the door and steps from her world into mine, writing about her is easier. Holly Harris in Crazy About Alaska is a real estate agent, and I was once one. I’ve driven clients around and shown them houses only to have them go a different direction. My husband and I bought a new house a few years ago, so I have tales to tell from that experience too. (Readers may think the purple shower is made up. Think again.) I chose to bring a college professor into her life as a love interest. I’m married to one.
Some of myself always finds its way into a story. Sometimes, it’s just something I might like to do. Holly’s sister Jemma rehabs furniture in Falling for Alaska, book one in the series. The idea for her business came while I was watching HGTV’s Flea Market Flip. Taking trash and making it beautiful sounds like something I’d like to try. Jemma also dislikes coffee and drinks tea. (Here I am again.) But she is not exactly me. She’s cooking challenged, and I’m a good cook.
Does the story become about the author when she inserts herself into it? Reality is only a fun fraction of the book. Holly has two men vying for her affections. That never happened. (It might have been fun if it had!) She also has five-year-old twins. I never experienced that.
By far the most challenging of the sisters in the series was Bree in book two, Loving Alaska. She’s a doctor, and my knowledge of the medical profession comes from sitting on the exam table, not from doing the exam. I spoke with doctors I knew and brought her to life. But Bree isn’t all made up either. She despises being in nature, especially camping. I’ve camped on a frozen river, beside a lake after canoeing or boating in, and many more places, but I’m with Bree and hotels are greatly preferred. There I am in the story again.
Reading the books I’ve written helps you know who I am. I’m a woman with a big imagination who enjoys bringing stories to life. Oh, and that slightly sarcastic sense of humor you may notice with Jemma and Holly? That might be from me as well.

Series Review: Alaskan Courage by Dani Pettrey

This is a series of five books all set in Alaska (YAY!). It follows the lives of the five McKenna siblings through several spine-tingling mysteries. I'm telling you what, people are dropping like flies in this series ;) But sereiously, I loved this series. The writing was the kind that pulls you in. I love a book that transports. (Honesty, if it isn't like that, I probably won't finish it!) I loved seeing each person's struggles throughout the series. Loved watching them all grow. Each book had lots of deep Scriptural truths. I loved the McKenna family. They were perfect, because they weren't perfect. (Did that make sense?) And of course, each book had one of the McKenna siblings falling fast and hard for a special someone. It was a little too lovey-dovey for me in parts...but...anyway, I still loved the romance. It was so super sweet. I think the last one was my favorite, well... maybe not my favorite story, I couldn't pick one for that, but I loved the ending. A strong, good, complete ending is absolutely needed for me to enjoy a book/series to the fullest. (Guess what... Dani Pettrey delivered!) All in all... spine tingling goodness getting 4 stars!

Review: All Things Hidden by Tracie Peterson and Kimberley Woodhouse

Set in Alaska during Roosevelt's administration, All Things Hidden is the story of the Matanuska Project, (By the way, I already returned the library book, dumb move I know, so I am most likely going to slaughter the spelling in this post. My apologies!) and all that went on there. Gwyn has lived in Alaska for most of her life, and she is unsure about all the changes that FDR's new plan will bring. But when this plan brings a handsome young doctor, she might just change her mind. Unfortunately, Jeremiah has secrets, and he isn't sure he can tell Gwyn or her father, secrets that include a broken engagement with Gwyn's little sister.



5 stars for this book!

1: I've never read an Alaska book set in this time period, so I enjoyed very much getting to learn about this. I honestly never knew, or never realized that I knew, I might have learned in school, about this! It was crazy, but in an kinda cool way.

2: I'm pretty sure that my favorite character in the whole story was Nasnana. She was so sweet and wise and funny and grandmothery and perfectly perfect! Oh my word!!!! I love love loved the spiritual guidance that she gave to Gwyn and Sadzi!

3: I was reading this book and I kept reading things about Gwyn and being.... Oops that's so me! The worry (Although I'm not in the habit of destroying my hankies! She definitely had it worse than I do!) and the hatred of change.......

4: Well, I'm not going to lie... I didn't actually cry over one unexpected death, simply because I didn't believe it happened. I'm serious. I think I went into denial over a book. What?!?!

5: See how pretty the cover is??? Don't you just love this! I wish I owned this book. Argh!

Review: No Safe Haven by Kimberley Woodhouse and Kayla Woodhouse

Jenna and her daughter Andie are stranded on the side of Sultana, their plane sabotaged by their pilot, a man they believed to be a friend. Now their only chance of survival is Cole Maddox, but can they even trust him. He says he knew her late husband, but Jenna's not convinced. The problem is, if they trust him they might die, but if they don't, they will die. The three of them work together to survive, but Jenna's still not sure why she and Andie were targeted in the first place. Something to do with Marc, apparently, but Cole isn't talking about it very much. With only God and each other, Jenna has to make a choice, for Andie's sake.




I'm definitely giving this book 5 stars!

1: Alaska! I've said this about a dozen times now, but I love all stories set in Alaska. I told my mom I was reading this and that it was about Alaska, and I was really surprised when she said "Oh, your favorite books are in Alaska!" Apparently she does listen to me ramble about my books ;) Anyway, this was great. I love native Alaskan words, and I love Denali and Sultana's original names. Way better than the other names given to them when it became a national park way back when.

2: I loved how the story went back and forth between third person for Cole and Jenna and Leaper and first person for Zoya and Andie. At first I was confused but then I really started to like it. It's really unique.

3: I liked learning about HSAN. I love a book that teaches you as you read. This was crazy informative. It was really interesting to read about. It genuinely peaked my curiosity in a really good way.

4: The mystery part was so super intense. At the end, I was so super close to tears. And it wasn't because of sadness or something like that. It was just SO intense. One of the best mysteries I've read recently!

5: Cole's conversion was possibly the best thing ever! Andie was so insistent and shared her faith so readily. And then Cole and oh my word it was the best thing ever. Best ending ever! I'm serious, go buy the book and read it! Highly recommend this book to all of y'all!

I was gonna wait and post this tomorrow but that isn't happening. I'm wayyyyyyy tooo excited!

Review: Submerged by Dani Pettrey

Bailey Craig goes back to her hometown of Yancey, Alaska, for her aunt's funeral, but all she really wants to do is leave. She wants to get away from her past, and all the mistakes she made there, including breaking the heart of Cole McKenna. Unfortunately, Cole won't let her be, and she's starting to feel things for him again. Bailey knows that she could never hope to be Cole's...well, anything. And then, she's surrounded by mystery, death, sabotage. Will she even get out of this one alive?



UMmm... let's go with... 5


1: Alaska is my favorite book setting EVER!!!! This book captured that spirit. It was (Honestly) the main reason the book appealed to me.

2. First time for Dani Pettrey (I've been reading a lot of new authors lately!) and I can't wait to get my hands on the others in this series. I loved the writing style (And as previously stated, the setting!)

3: I loved the characters. I can't wait to read more about them, even if it's just what color their pajamas are. The characters reach out and grab your heart, and pretty soon you're ready to book a ticket to Alaska and meet them. (Wishful thinking)

4: I love how Cole helped Bay see that her past didn't define her future, or even her present. That when Jesus died for her, and she accepted him as Savior, she became a new creature, and all of that was laid to rest.

5: I loved learning all about diving. It's never really interested me that much but this book has rather niggled that hook (I muddled that up, but please understand what I was going for) I also love love love reading about Alaskan history, & I learned something new about that too in this book. Russian-Alaska is really cool, all of it is really!

Review: In the Shadow of Denali by Tracie Peterson & Kimberly Woodhouse

This book is the first book in the series The Heart of Alaska. In it Allan tries to find out how his father really died six years ago. He's been told that his father's death atop of Denali (Mount McKinley) was the result of poor judgement and neglect by the trail guide, John Ivanoff. However, upon travelling to Alaska and meeting John, and his beautiful daughter Cassidy, Allan begins to doubt whether or not the stories he's heard are true.


This book is a 5 star book for sure.

1: First off, the cover itself was so beautiful. My mom saw the front cover, and without reading the back, said she wanted to read this. Not that it's always okay to judge a book by its cover, but in this case, the outside definitely reflected the beauty of the inside.

2: I loved the setting. I love Alaska. I never used to think about Alaska that much. I mean, it's just there right? But ever since reading the Song of Alaska, Yukon Quest, and Alaskan Quest series (what is the plural of series?) I've been fascinated with Alaska and the Yukon. Especially during this time period.

3: This book is so full of biblical encouragement for so many levels of need, for the angry ones in Allan, for the guilt-carrying ones in John, for those ready to absorb in Thomas, for those who can't see God's love in Mrs. Johnson, and for those who just need a reminder to stay hopeful and hapy in Christ in Cassidy.

4: I loved the reconciliation theme in this book. Allan and John, Allan and God, Cassidy and her grandparents. The intercharacter relationships were wonderful. I think my favorite was Mrs. Johnson and Cassidy. I can't wait for more books in this series.

5: This book.... literally I had chill bumps for a great portion of it. It was amazing in the plot and really in every way. I really do recommend this. I read it in one sitting... which I mean isn't that that unusual for me, but it is a big thing since sometimes I let it sit for a day or two before picking it up. Not this one!
